What does the government do with all that land?

When a town becomes a ghost town, what does the government/state do with all the land? With the houses and old buildings on it? They tear them down eventually I assume, but what then???

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

This is what I wondered too. I only saw the end of this movie years ago when she returns to Bountiful, but I wondered if her, or anyone in her family, were still paying taxes for the property they own or the government ended up with the property. It's like that out where I live. They have property all around and it looks abandoned but people do own it and have to pay property taxes. Amazing to me because they do nothing with in. Only on occasion do they hire someone with a bush hog to come and mow it. A few old buildings still stand, though.

My parents owned a small house on twenty rural acres. They ended up giving away ten acres just so they wouldn't have to pay the property taxes on them anymore. The land was just brush and rocks.
