Deleted Scarecrow Dance

Was anyone as unimpressed as I was by that extended dance portion from "If I Only Had a Brain" in THE WIZARD OF OZ? After watching it, I could see why it was cut. We didn't need to see it in 1939, why did we need to be subjected to it in 1985.

I certainly didn`t mind seeing it at all and can see why it was cut from the film. It was too long and somehow made the sets look more like SETS.

You could see the yellow brick road was linoleum and the cornstalks looked like some kind of plastic or satin material. Also, the crow flying around with the hay in its mouth was way too phoney looking.

Another thing, if the scarecrow could have flown like that it would have made for a whole different film.

Still in all it was fun to see what creative ideas they had while making the film.

Yeah it was great to see that scene but like you guys, I can definitely see why it was cut. It looked ridiculous with him flying all over the place

It seems that in the course of balancing out the 3 co stars screen time Ray Bolger was given the shortest dance because he had the most total screen time. Also he was the least well known of the 3 performers at the time. Bert Lahr was a big star so he gets the King of the Forest number highlighting him. As a huge Ray Bolger fan I am sorry it was cut, but considering that they almost cut Over the Rainbow, I guess one shouldnt complain too much...

A bigger tragedy would have been if they would have gone ahead with Ray Bolger as the Tin Man instead of the Scarecrow, when Bolgers style of dancing was so perfectly suited to the latter part
