lol...i know!!! i love emilio estevez's work, but he screwed this movie up because he didn't stick to the original story!

I blame director Christopher Cain and Paramount Pictures. Paramount didn't invest much money in this movie and it shows. Christopher Cain is a no-talent hack with a history of putting out 'sub-par' movies.
Although the screenplay somewhat deviates from the book, I think it's a reasonable interpretation of the Hinton story given the time, money and resourses available to make the movie. Just because a movie doesn't follow the book, doesn't make it a bad movie. Look at 'Jaws'. It was nothing like the book! Both 'Jaws' tales were great as separate entities telling two versions of the story . . .
