I'm sure we all remember and loved the part where Richard Farnsworth's character (Foster) was riding Sylvester in the moonlight getting him to dance! But I heard he was riding a Andalusian Stallion for that part.
shareIt's either an Andalusian or an upper level dressage horse. Horses that compete even at Advanced to four star level eventing (which is 3 stars lower than what Sylvester was competing at as Prelim is a one star event), they do not have to do any passage or piaffe, as shown in that sequence. It was still beautiful and as a coach and equestrian of over 40 years, my friends and I still love this movie--quirks and all :D

It gave Foster credibility to know what he was talking about! He did not do it in front of people to show off, in any form. It went a long way to show how he was much more than an old broken down cowboy. If I remember correctly, it was the only time Foster was even shown on a horse.
Doing that sequence in the moonlight made it nearly impossible to see if it was really Farnsworth doing the riding, so I suspect it was actually another rider.
