Locations?

There is a bit more driving in the beging of the movie from the version they show on TBS. They show a part where they enter Florida and I have tracked that down to be on SR. 301.

In St. Petersburg I found the bridge they drive over when entering 'Citrus Cove'. I could not find any houses.

Any other locations you guys are aware about?

Filmed on, and around SHAVER LAKE California, U.S.A., approx. 1 hour East of Fresno, Ca.

I do believe that the movie also was shot in Florida.

I have heard some that the location in FL was Madeira Beach.

It was filmed in and around the St Pete and Tampa area. I had a chance to meet movie crew people when they were scouting locations back then. The dream house Candy and his family get run out of is directly behind the park in Reddington Shores,...it's painted yellow now. That house sits right on the water. Also visable is the St Johns Pass Bridge

Awesome, any other locations?

Actually, John's Pass bridge is a ways down from Redington Shores and would be tough to see since its all the way past Madeira Beach. The actual address of the real nice house the Chester's were asked to leave from is 18220 Sunset Blvd., Redington Shores, FL. House hasn't changed much, and neither has the other two houses on either side of it.

yeah , the bridge it the link between Madeira Beach and Treasure Island
Currently being ripped down and rebuilt so taller boats can pass , I go to TI every year , was there this JUNE!!! :)

reply

the film was shot only in Florida and Atlanta Georgia

I didn't see this mentioned, but maybe everyone who watched the movie knows this, when the family first arrives in Florida and the camera cuts to closeup of Jack driving, if you look out the window you see a sign that says, "Fort Desoto Park" which is in St.Pete Fla (Tierra Verde)the sign is still there to this day, also I may be wrong about this but in the very next scene I think thats the second bridge that goes into Fort Desoto, with downtown St.Pete visible, which brings me back to my first observation, that they were heading away from Fort Desoto in that shot.

reply

I live in Madiera Beach and the scene in which it shows them coming over the bridge is Johns Pass Bridge which as stated is being torn down and being made anew. There is also a scene when they are looking for the Sail for the race, and this is on your way out to Tierra Verde.

reply

Well the bridge is finally done. It took that long.

Any other locations from the movie that might be interesting?

I recently went on a road trip leaving Ontario Canada for Florida, and before I left I watched a series of vacation movies including "summer rental". It had been a childhood favorite of mine and I'd made a ritual of watching regularly throughout the summer months. I'd always been led to believe that it was filmed somewhere near Miami. One of my first stops when I arrived in Florida was treasure island. A scene I'd always remembered was when the family crossed the bridge into the fictional 'citrus cove'. I was out for a drive and stopped at a restaurant named Gators, in treasure island and off the patio was a drawbridge. I decided to walk across and recognized the bridge and land formations and scenery including the wooden guides that keep the boats in he correct spot under the bridge. I realized I was quite possibly on the same bridge from the movie. From the bridge I pulled out my phone and looked up some snapshots of the movie and realized it was the same bridge. I had stumbled upon it by accident of all the places in Florida. Looking up the filming locations on imdb I realized I was for sure on the bridge. Being Canadian, and realizing I was in the same spot John Candy had been during the filming of one of my favorites of his, made the trip all that much better. We miss you John.

What a nice story. Nothing beats a road trip.
