The big difference between the 2 movies is, John Candy was actually funny. Chevy Chase is in Maryland.
shareChase was more like a cartoon character. As funny as National Lampoon's Vacation was, this movie seemed to have more sentimental scenes (like Candy interacting with his wife or talking to his daughter on the beach). John Candy was one of a kind!
shareIt seemed more of a family movie than Vacation. Don't get me wrong, both movies deal with families seeking vacation from their hectic lives, and everything seems to go wrong. Summer Rental seems more light-hearted, while Vacation had some dark humor that might go over the kids heads("My dad said I'm the best kisser", dog being dragged behind the car and it's cop describing that it's pieces were scattered down the road, the aunt dying and them tying her corpse to the top of the car). Don't get me wrong, I love the Vacation movies, but Summer Rental is just more "wholesome" by comparison. If I'm not mistaken, they actually use to air it on Disney Channel back in the day(damn, when Disney Channel actually aired good movies).

I don't really feel any similarities. This film was more about the destination, where as the vacation movie was more about the trip.
