Great movie about human frailty

I think Amanda Plummer was perfect in this role. Their relationship was an "awkward" one. A lot of loving relationships are. She was a little older, probably not as good looking, but smarter and better adjusted than he. The tragedy of the story is that her love could have given him a happy life, but he wasn't ready to recognize that. He had his own delusional dreams to pursue at the moment she came back for him.

Some people have asked what is the meaning of her smile at the end as she drives away. I could be wrong, but my guess is that she's smiling at the audience, as if to say, "this is the way life really is sometimes. Sad things happen that we can't prevent."

Do you have any other ideas about the smile?

"Extremism in the pursuit of moderation is no vice."
