Availability of TV movie

Has any one heard of a copy of this movie being available?

reply

Second hand, in Britain. I bought mine from amazon.co.uk z-shops, after a failed e-bay.co.uk bid.

I recorded this movie from ABC-TV Movie of the Week on VHS and Beta (remember Beta?) back in 1985 when it was first shown, and transferred it to another new VHS tape in 1990, which is still like new. It is edited only to remove commercial breaks, and the continuity looks good. I wish I had bought an original copy from Fries Productions in the mid-1990s when they released it on VHS video. This was the only American release. If anyone has one for sale at a reasonable price, please let me know. This movie was a low-budget version of STARMAN (1984) which was made to be just different enough to make it seem original. The characters are well-defined and the actors' performances are first-rate, and the costumes & makeup are very well done, especially the alien Mary (Belinda Bauer) in her New Wave hair and leather jacket, and her single pendant star-earring. James Spader's Joey Callahan is a great performance as the Boston-Irish lad driving his souped-up 1972 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible. The art direction is interesting and subtle, with several fine touches. Pete Kowanko is a good supporting actor also. Of course the movie falls flat on its face due to the cheap, almost non-existent visual effects. Only the cinematography and Gil Melle's electro-jazz music score make this movie a real delight on the production end.

i also want a copy of this film it was one of favourites along with tuff turff also with james spader i did have both on vhs and beta but sadly i watched them too much and they are no longer watchable if any knows where i can get them on dvd it would be much appreciated

I've not found Starcrossed on DVD, not even used. I sometime search in the net and it is not even to be found there (as of now). I've a copy in English, although I am in Germany, which is really lucky, that I taped it during the short time we had English TV free over cabel. But it's VHS and TV-Quality was not so good to begin with and probably worn out.

Tuff Turf however is on DVD, I also like this film lot and own it. I just checked it's still to be found and available at amazon.com, a no-thrills copy, no extras IMHO and probaly no sub-titles but a reasonable price (as of now).
If you can play NTSC/RC1 (all US-Players do and a lot of cheap ones can be switched to region-free, leaving only NTSC as a problem, with PAL being the standard in some countries) I suggest to pick it up.

If you are into James Spader and like weird filmes (David Lynch e.g.), I also suggest Secretary with him, but be warned, this film is not for everyone.

What was critized but I really liked about Starcrossed was the simple space-ship - obviously low-budget, but hey, why should space-ships look like a high-tech-gadget? A totally different drive might work like this space-ship. The solutions brought forth by the other SF is not better, only looking more technical (and more like the time they came from).

What can be done to get a copy for myself? I have a copy on VHS but quality is not the best and missing bits and pieces because of recording off of TV and editing out commercials. Reach me at: [email protected]

I have it in it's entirety (absolutely loved the movie) but my copy is probably not much better than yours. It was an old movie and VHS degrades over time. Fortunately I got around to ripping it last year. I had it up on Youku but nobody watched it. I can't put it on Veoh, they hate me. Eventually I'll seed it or YouTube it, or do something with it. If you want, I'll spin you a copy, leave me a note.

I misunderstood something, I guess. I didn't know there was someone out here trying to sell a bootleg copy of the movie. Furthermore, I did not know know that there was this much interest in obtaining out of print movies, since most can be found though bittorrent and a variety of other means. I would urge folks to search Nabolister or any of the torrent search engines before they buy a bootleg copy of this movie. Most of these are traded for free and no one is trying to make any money from them. You may even find other rare movies you are looking for. You should only have to buy bootleg copies as a last resort or if you really want to .

No one asked me? I am very sorry. But this thread is about the availability of this movie, so I thought the question was being asked. I merely responded as to how someone can watch the movie right now, this minute, on a really good clear server that many people use, particularly for VHS movies such as these. There is no need to take the risk of send cash in the money to a stranger. It just sounds kind of risky to me, and I am entitled to my opinion. I am also going to seed it tonight on Mininova, because this is what people generally do with movies, they share. They share through torrents, through all "movie links websites", etc. Before lately, I had never heard of anyone trolling IMDB forums trying to make money with them. I wish you would consider seeding your copy of the movie, if it is so good. If you are a real fan of James Spader as you say, you should want people to see m movies such as these.

please tell me how you got a copy of this for free i have been approached by the bootleggers and they wanted a ridiculus amount for a copy i dont mind paying but not what they were asking

reply

I don't know how much they are asking, I occasionally see them sell it on ebay for around 15 bux which is the going rate for bootlegs these days I guess. Bootleggers do serve a purpose but their place is on ebay, and then you have some safety against being ripped off. My feeling is to never send cash to someone who solicits you first. It costs nothing to put a "want it now" ad on ebay, for instance. In the case of this movie, I had it so I ripped it and put the avi on a torrent. You can download it or watch it on Nabolister or YouTube so you should not need to spend money when you can't be sure of what you'll get.

I'm sorry, I've been reading the posts out of order again. I never used to spend that much time on forums, not much at all really until I got such a private message sent to me by Mr(Ms)Wiz, but mostly I fool around Mininova and don't use DVD's. I would, in general suggest that if folks do get a good copy of a hard to find movie to rip it with dvd decrypter and autogk and upload it on the torrent search engine. Nice to do something for fellow fans of the movie. I don't know how much money can be made selling any of these, from what I have seen people mostly end up bargaining and trading them like baseball cards anyway.

Sahuber, if you are still out there, please contact me. A few years ago I did a DVD-R transfer of this film from my VHS videotape and the quality is very good, complete with no commercials, from the original January 30, 1985 broadcast on ABC-TV Movie of the Week. I can make you, or anyone else, a copy also.

The ship from Starcrossed if I remember looked more like some neon objet d'art sulpture than a space ship but it was cool and reflected the New Wave sensiblities of the age and film. I suppose it could have been just a form of artistic liberties in scifi but the application of creating a starship with the ability to look mundane and not detract from it's surroundings is something that was not explored often. The only example I can think of is the TARDIS which had a special circuit inside so it could disguise itself to fit in to a planet's infrastructure. Perhaps that is what Mary's ship from Starcrossed was.

reply

You're right, it looks like some kind neon tubing, like you'd make a storefront sign from, very cheap. This movie was low budget, and one of the reviews on this page has is exactly right in what it says. Probably, the producers did not know that it would be this successful a TV movie. What I liked about it, besides the excellent sound track, was the story. It's one that takes me back to my youth. I think it would be every young man's fantasy to meet a gorgeous space alien such as Belinda Bauer, and she acted the role so well. In many ways the movie came off as believable. Of course movies nowadays would probably use some kind of worm hole or the star gate thing.
