Help with movie!

Just browsing through IMDB noticed this film, haven't seen it in years. Reminded me of another film that I can't even remember the name of, wondering if anyone could help?

A few of my other friends have seen it but no one can remember the name.

I remember little except at the beginning a kid and his brother are racing around on a planet, they crash, his brother dies and he's stranded on this planet. There are also these weird creatures, like birds that try to peck your brains out through your skull.

What's weird is that there's a ship coming to rescue them led by an old captain. Because the film is about time travel/displacement it turns out the old Captain IS the kid (You see the birds attack the kid, then later in the film you see the captain has a metal plate in his head covering the wound)

Sorry I can't remember more; strange film, every now and then someone mentions this film and we all sit around saying "What was it called? You remember the bit with the birds?"

If anyone has any idea what this might be, despite my poor description, it was be a great relief.
