Great MGM Release.

MGM Has finally released this Sci-Fi classic on widescreen DVD, with a remastered soundtrack. Kudos to them! :-) Great stuff! I love seeing this movie in its full wide screen glory. It's a bit cheesy, but very-very fun.

The following only applies to those who bought the DVD prior to June 21st 2005;

If you purchased a DVD copy of this film you should know that you have likely purchased a pirated version.

"Starchaser: The Ledgend of Orin" has never been issued on DVD, and most likely will not in the near future. This includes a so-called "Special Edition" two disk set.

There have only been two publications of this title; one from Entertainment in Video for British and General European viewers, and one from KVC Home Video for U.S. and Canadian viewers.

If you purchased this title on DVD you should file a complaint with the auction house that helped in the transaction; such as ebay or Amazon.

Considering the people who own the rights to the movie have completely abandoned it I don't see much of a problem with this. In software circles it's called abandonware when a software maker no longer makes a product that people still want copies of. Unless the rights owners start offering this movie there really is no other choice for the fans.

Also technically copyright infringement occurs when you are taking revenues away from the copyright holder. Yet how is selling a bootleg of a movie that the copyright holder has completely abandoned taking revenues away? Show me firsthand video or DVD's being offered. THEN we'll talk.

The copyright has not been "completely abandoned." Lines of code meant to dazzle your computer screen are defined differently from other intellectual works. Copyrights, in the United States anyway, lapse one-hundred years after the author's death, or after the death of his last surviving immediate family member, whichever comes first.

I normally don't give references on these boards anymore, but occasionally a post like yours comes a long that needs to be addressed. I would strongly urge you to pick up a copy of "Patent it Yourself." That should explain the difference.

Odds are you're just some kid who plays a lot of games, or some adult who's spent too much of their life coding, and hasn't done a lot of "self initiative" type of stuff. Go out and see the world, and don't post unless you know what you're talking about.

reply

That has to be the single most infuriating thing I have ever read on these boards.
The guy you replied to with this drivel put it better than I ever could, so I'll just say that either you're simply a troll, or a very sad, sad person.

Either way you have my sympathies.

I'm very much an adult (who is not a programmer) who wants a good quality copy of a movie I loved when the studios didn't offer one, thank you very much. I am VERY much aware of copyright law, but I see no logic in calling it infringement when the copyright holder won't even offer the work in question for sale. How can you infringe (affect sales) when it's not for sale? I have very little sympathy for that sort of behavior.

Besides if it weren't for the sales of bootleg DVD's MGM probably wouldn't have released the Starchaser DVD that's now being made available. In widescreen no doubt. At least MGM did the smart thing instead of trying to sue people for providing product they themselves didn't at the time. Am I going to buy the official release? You bet!

Only MGM knows why they released it. But odds are their marketing department did some good research and found that sci-fi fans like this movie, and tend to be film aficionados; ergo the widescreen release.

I'm glad they did it.

But they did NOT abandon the copyright. No company in their right mind does. Some are larger than others, and can police their property better. But they do not let it go to public domain.

Which is exactly why people have to get a pirate version. I'm lucky I've still got my old VHS.

An official DVD release is on the way from MGM Home Entertainment:

Oh yeah!!! In widescreen and at around $15 as well. Would be nice to see some extras like interviews, commentaries and stuff. But just getting the DVD on widescreen is tons better than dealing with what we were previously discussing. I think movie makers are finally catching on that people will indeed buy these old movies if offered.

Excellent - I can't wait to get a copy. Not seen this film since 1985 - I loved it. I did buy it a few years ago from a shop only to find it was the official case with a bad copy inside - even the end of the film was missing. So the DVD will be much welcome.
