Age difference between young Paul & young Michelle

According to the movie. Paul is supposed to be 14 years old and his sister is supposed to be 11 years old. but in flashbacks Paul is supposed to be 12 & Michelle 6. how is that possible? If the ages were right, Paul would be 12 and Michelle would be 9 (not 6).
