Gary Busey was so damn funny in this movie. I really think he was drunk during the entire filming of the movie. It was even funnier watching him hurl himself into the wall instead of having a stunt double pull it off. All I gotta say is CLASSIC BUSEY!
yep absolutely busey really made this movie POP ... i told my own favorite niece the 'jackass joke' one night when i was a bit loaded ... funny thing, her mom had about the same reaction as the mom in the movie ... mom's have no sense of humor i've found :P
but this was one of the best 'early' king adaptations ... my aunt and uncle saw it and my aunt said it scared the hell out of her lol ... well, it wasn't THAT scary, considering what kubrick had already done with 'the shining', but it was exciting and fun ...
unfortunately, it's hard to adapt the novella since it goes month by month ... there is only one day a month that truly has a 'full' full moon, right? it starts to become 'unfull' soon enough and in less or about a day ... this movie did a good job of jamming the action together and the breaks for time it needs to take is done very well ... you don't feel like they're 'skipping ahead' in the plot or anything ...
one of my fave quotes is when they are in the woods, in the fog hunting the 'maniac' and the woman asks: "Bobby, are you gonna make lemonade in your pants?" lmao ... that line always cracks me up
but busey is just killer in this role ... and yeah, i'd hang with him, well i would have ... can't drink anymore because of ulcers but busey was a running mate/drinking buddy of hunteer s thompson's so you know he had to be of top drinking stock :)
take care, cormac
"One star in the sky so I named it Otis Redding" -- John Hiatt
I'm replying to the whole board, not just you Doc, you look to be the latest here.
In addition to Busey's humor, I think he did very well in serious scenes like when talking to the sheriff. The sheriff thinks Uncle Red is off the wall for suspecting the reverend and Red says "I just think the reverend ought to be checked out" (close to that). The sheriff deadpans "That can be arranged". That was good acting by both.
When Marty's mom is castigating Red for not treating Marty the way she thought someone like Marty (disabled) should be treated. Something along the line that Marty doesn't need someone like frivolous like Red distracting Marty from the difficult life he has ahead of him. Red says something to the effect that Marty is still human but just has a different life. I can't remember the dialogue just now. But Busey delivered that real good. Even though Red is a boozer and rough neck of sorts, he is still a good ole soul, deep down.
That scene/dialogue Red had with the "old world craftsman" making the silver bullet was memorable also.
I think this was one of Busey's best roles; he always seems to capture the mood just right with his facial expressions, tone of voice etc. He usually does well no matter what role he takes on.
