The ending

Im very confused about the ending..... Did I miss something because the ending I got was Marrianne getting a box of books from Colonel Brandon is that the ending or was there a skip?

reply

No, you didn't miss anything. That was the ending. Bit abrupt wasn't it?

If you didn't know the story in advance you may not realise that Marianne and the Col end up happily married. All you see is her change in attitude towards him, when she looks to him for advice and help with her education. I think this could have been handled better.

reply

Yes I totally agree and I've read the book and whatched other Sense and Sensibility movies. After the movie was over I just sat there staring at the screen thinking is this it? HAHA so yes it did end abruptly!

reply

I'd forgotten how abrupt that ending is! I just finished rewatching it last night. I got ready to FF through the credits and theme music (again!) to get to the next episode, but it wouldn't fast forward. And then I remembered that it ends there. Badly done! ;o)

reply

Exactly! They should have given at least some reference to the people yet to read the book that there's a happy marriage ahead for Marianne and Brandon. This is such a shame, because so many things in this adaptation were done really well.

I watched it for the first time this morning and I was surprised they ended it there! And I was surprised they cut Margaret out of this version.

reply

Margaret was also cut out of the 1971 version.

I think it ends too abruptly.

reply

The credits for this adaptation say it was based on the screenplay for the '71 version. I've always thought that was an odd idea. Surely an adaptation should be based on the source novel/play etc.? Or is that just crazy talk

The people have appointed me. I am their leader. I must follow them.

reply

I thought it wasn't based on the 1971 screenplay, but partly based on a S&S stage play written by Denis Constanduros (sp?) who was also the screenwriter of the 1971 version. So there is a connection between the two, but not one based on the other? Does that sound right?

reply

That makes more sense than my understanding of the situation!

reply

I was surprised they cut Margaret out because even though it doesn't seem like she plays much of a role in the story, wasn't it supposed to add to how sad their situation was, three sisters without dowrys is even worse than two sisters without dowrys?

I wish they had the 1971 version available on DVD! I haven't been able to find it anywhere!

reply

It is available on DVD, but only in region 2.

reply

I hope they'll put it on region 1 then, it gives me hope then, since they put it on region 2! I am not region free yet, LOL.

I liked the ending when I frirst saw it many years ago, because I had read the book.. and I enjoy the delicacy of teh ending. We see Marianne clearly beginning to like and have a friendly affectionate relationship wtih Brandon It is truer to the book since in the book, they dont marry until she is 19. THey have had time to get to know each other and she has had more time to recover from Willoughby.
However I do have my doubts about Marianne really coming to love Brandon, but in the context of this adapation I think that the development of their relationship is nicely done.

Im just watching the DVD now and enjoying it....

I first saw this adaptation several years ago and wasn't impressed. I re-watched it a couple of weeks back (right after finishing the novel) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
