How popular was this movie when it first came out?

I just saw this movie for the first time and loved it. I had never really heard of it before and it came out before I was born! Was it popular when it first came out in 1985? What was its box office performance like? Did it do okay or did it flop? Anybody remember?

C. Thomas Howell was something of a B-grade pinup at the time. The movie didn't do that well (its box-office is linked on the main page) making between 8-9 million domestically. However, it probably wasn't that expensive a movie to make so with the box-office and video rentals it would have done ok.

It was only lukewarmly received by the critics, and it didn't really make much of a cultural impact at the time, just coming and going (like so many movies) very quickly, and being very quickly forgotten.

Oh okay. Yeah I saw the box office numbers, but back in the 80s ticket prices were less expensive, so I didn't think 8-9 million was considered as low back then as it would be now. I wasn't too sure, though. Thanks for your insight. I figured it was probably one of those movies that just kinda came and went at the box office.

I worked at a movie theatre in high school and we got Secret Admirer. It was a sleeper with not much advertising except by word-of-mouth. It did okay, but never reached "hit" status. Part of the problem, I think, was the release date. Rambo II was still a hot ticket item, and even more was Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which came out a week before Secret Admirer. Still, this one of my personal treasures.

It was a much bigger hit when it came out on video. I didn't see it in the theatre, but all of my friends and I had it on VHS.

Great, under-rated film. One of my faves. Could probably recite every line.
