A Box Office Christmas Flop

I can't ever forget when this movie hit theatres and heard all the bad publicity for it from critics. I was going to go see it one fine day, but at the last minute changed my mind and saw King Solomon's Mines instead - it was playing at the same multiplex. I never forgot that.

Wasn't my fault it flopped. I paid my money to see it in the cinema, at least my parents did, as I was only six years old.

yeah as it was sold as from the makers of "Superman" i.e. the original films (1 and 2) which were hotter than hot back then, it was majorly hyped and there was great expectations, but ultimately it proved a massive box-office bomb (probably largely due to the lousey, dreadful reviews)...

...however time has been kind to it and thanks to a title like "Santa Claus: The Movie" it has got a "semi" place amongst the Christmas movie classics.

...and while the first half of the film is perfect, the second is questionable on many levels - so thinking that this deserves to be rethought somewhat and of a remake proper.

There was so much less entertainment news back then. I saw it and never knew it didn't do great box office.

Yeah, I saw the figures on the box office page on here and I was surprised. Feel bad for the people who obviously put a lot of hard work and imagination into this movie.

It's pretty incredible considering all the Christmas movies that have come out since that have made an undeserving bundle. This film was so much better than Tim Allen's Santa Clause and that made a fortune and spawned some $hitty sequels. Not to mention stuff like Four Christmases, The grinch and The Polar Express which were real garbage festive movies yet are so popular/successful. It's a shame this film is so underappreciated.

$hitter was full

I hated Tim Allen's Santa Clause as well. He is not my favorite comedian with his stupid grunting. This film is better than Santa Clause, but most any film would be.

As to the people who made the film: Nobody sets out to make a bad film. Sometimes they just don't realize that what they are making isn't working. The Salkinds weren't exactly geniuses.

Was that The King Solomon's Mines with Richard Chamberlain?

You should have seen Santa Claus.

It's a Wonderful Life flopped at the movies too. And The Wizard of Oz didn't do real well the first go around either. Both hit their strides with the advent of TV.

I believe as time has passed Santa Claus has gotten better and King Solomon's Mines has suffered. I love Richard Chamberlain but I remember cringing at that movie. Of course, their main problem was remaking a classic with Debra Kerr and Stewart Granger and remaking it badly.

It was the sixth biggest film of the year in the UK, but for whatever reason it did really badly in the US.

reply

I wish I would have. I caught it on HBO after it hit cable.

I remember it not getting good reviews. In fact, I recalled Gene Siskel mentioning one problem with the film was that Santa and BZ never meet each other, which is sort of dumb. This happens to be on a website where they have reviews from At the Movies. Funny thing: Gene and Roger both make suggestions for improving the film and what Gene suggests is sort of what Jack Skellington did in Nightmare Before Christmas.
