the killer fungus

The university professor talks about a fungus that's killing all the beautiful trees. According to her, it arrived in France in infected crates from the American army during World War II. Does anyone feel like that part was somehow meant as a political, anti-American, even anti-war allegory? Otherwise, why include all that information, all those details? That part bothered me because I felt like it was kind of lame and cliché. It's fine to be anti-war and anti-imperialism, but the Americans only joined World War II reluctantly and if anything, they gave France much needed help. Any thoughts on that?

Yes, I have thoughts. That's how the disease arrived. It's a fact that was stated in a very matter of fact way. You are perhaps being over sensitive and looking for anti-American sentiment. It may have been a statement that the effects of war linger for decades, but even that might be a stretch.
