I know grease on bare skin can help keep you warm, but wrapping yourself in plastic too? Any perspiration would stay locked under the plastic and freeze in temps like that, making you colder. You see people try to keep their feet dry with plastic bags in their boots and they end up losing their feet to frostbite.

I took that as a way of protecting against the extremely cold water they knew was beneath them. Sort of a homemade dry suit.

Never heard of either one, especially not of people putting plastic bags on their feet, that's just stupid :)
