Great post, I always thought that the film was a long MTV music video, but it works if you don't take it to serious. Rocky IV was definitely the moment when all realism went out of the Rocky series and Rocky became more of a cartoon/superhero character.

It is my least favorite of the all the Rocky movies but, I agree, it's fun to watch. I do find myself skipping over James Brown and the flashback driving scene though.

reply

That's so funny and accurate about fast forwarding throw that god awful James Brown scene. I do the same thing lol.

reply

Hey the James Brown scene is awesome

Please stay on topic.

Creed's entrance was corny but I enjoyed it. It was so over the top it was hilarious. It made sense. Creed was trying to treat Drago like he was some big joke.

I just couldn't help but feeling sad though re-watching the film knowing this is the last thing Creed does before the boxing match that ends his life.

Actually, it's more like

91 minutes (and 32 seconds) movie minus
3:35 studio logo / recap / opening credits
2:50 James Brown song
4:25 driving/flashback
3:30 training sequence #1
4:10 training sequence #2
1:18 Soviet national anthem
3:30 fight montage
4:05 end credits =

64 minutes and 9 seconds of what you call "actual story". Which is a false premise to begin with, since everything on that list other than the credits is part of the storytelling.

reply

Except that it's not.

The recap isn't necessary to the story.
James Brown's song isn't necessary to the story.
The driving music video definitely isn't necessary to the story.
1 training sequence is necessary, but 2 is not.

Remove all of those things and the story would not change or be told less effectively.

reply

I didn't say they were necessary to the story. But they are most certainly part of the storytelling. While they may be excessive, these scenes all serve a purpose.

reply

And I didn't say anything about storytelling in my original post.

reply

I can't think of a movie with more montages than Rocky IV.
