Has Rocky ever blocked or evaded a punch?

This dude took everything to the face. A boxer with such horrible defense would have been killed in the ring a long time ago

reply

Only time Rocky had any defense was in the rematch with Clubber. Every other fight he took every shot flush on the face. In real life Rocky probably would've died after the first fight with Apollo. Still love the films though even if the boxing is quite unrealistic. Although Stallone did make things a bit more realistic with the boxing in the last film.

I know this post is three years old but oh well, Rocky defended himself pretty good against Tommy Gunn as well. Other fights, Rocky pretty much took all the punishment but it was said in the rematch with Clubber that that was his strategy.

Drago is like 8 inches taller than Rocky. Kind of hard to dodge punches of a guy who is so much taller because of the reach.

But yes, if you know anything about Rocky movies, it's all about taking a beating and persevering. That's what the Rocky character is all about. He's not a technically sound fighter but a bruiser from Philadelphia.

watch a jake lamotta fight

I was 6 years old when I watched Rocky II in the theaters. I thought boxing was so cool after watching that. Until I saw a real fight on TV and found the sport very boring. I was like: "they hardly hit each other."

yeah rocky blocked every single punch with his face lol and yeah i wish real boxing matches were like they are in rocky films lol

reply

Someone mentioned Clubber Lang. IIRC Clubber was the only other southpaw rocky fought wasn't he? Usually it's harder to block when you are fighting a fighter with the opposite dominant hand. Reason being you're blocking with your punching hand.

I caught the last 10 minutes of Rocky 2 on TV the other night.

He literally takes every punch from Apollo straight in the face...No guard or anything.

Made me laugh in some places.

yes, Balboa was great blocking punches with his temporal bone and parietal bone of head, mandible, , etc...

Realistically, Rocky's face should resemble Voldemort's.

He did duck some of Clubber's punches in the rematch in Rocky 3, remember? In fact, I think Clubber in Round one got only one back punch.

reply

Yeah, round one he did, that was the strategy, beat him with speed and stamina. Round 2 he decided 'FĂșck this, I'm going to prove I'm a man' and blocked all Clubber's punches with his head until Clubber got tired.

Did you see his fight against Clubber Lang in the rematch.

He dodge and avoided every piunch thrown by Lang in the first round. And in the third he used the ropey dope and bob and weave.

reply

Watch the Mike Tyson vs Marvis Frazier fight. Marvis is still alive.

Rocky winds up with some serious brain injuries by part V, doesn't he? In any case the guy goes through these training montages every movie to be faster or stronger, but winds up almost never blocking, dodging, or connecting punches till the last couple rounds of his fights.

Rocky should of been in a coma by part II.

reply

Tyson vs Frazier was like 25 seconds long, he got hit with like 4 punches that put him out. Rocky went rounds upon rounds of getting his block knocked off by various fighters

reply

Look at it this way... Boxing rounds are 3 minutes long. In the movies, they are 15 round matches (except 6) so they are close to 45 minute matches, which most of them went to the 15th, except the Lang ones.

I look at the boxing scenes as the equivilent of getting the highlights.

reply

The boxing strategy of Rocky III kind of fell apart because Apollo had trained Rocky to be like HIM, float like a butterfly, dance, slip punches, etc etc. then after about one minute of the first round in which Rocky actually does stay on his toes, out of Clubber's reach, he goes right back to letting him pound on his head.

He must of dodged a few in his early years or at least not got hit often, he only got his nose broke for the first time during his first fight with Creed.

But I guess he was just fighting bums.

Rocky's strategy was to wear out his opponent's fists with his face. He was mentally irregular.

reply

Rocky III was on again today -- and he actually DOES dodge/duck quite a few of Clubber's punches.

I didn't remember it that way, but he really does. In the rematch, I don't think Clubber connects with one good punch.

But then of course in IV Rocky just goes out and lets Drago take batting practice on his head.

He was at his best in the last Clubber fight, he actually learnt to block, dodge and box a bit, plus he could still take a punch.

I miss the red spoiler tags.

it's a very strange strategy.
