Part 2 & 3 are very weak in comparison!

The Return of the Living Dead (1985) feels genuine and still holds up for the most part even in 2020. It’s a fun flick. Original and cool, dark and gritty.

In comparison part 2 is a lame horror comedy without horror and comedy.

Part 3, directed by the hack Brian Yuzna, was a love story based on young love, teenage angst & set in military facility. Nonsense.

What about parts 4 and 5?

reply

I love number 2. It's not as good as the first, but it's fun.

Number 3 has great makeup effects, but a forgettable plot. It's still better than the following movies.

reply

Nah, I like the trilogy for what it is. 4-5 weren't needed.

I’m a big fan of the original but I haven’t seen the others. Should I watch 2 and 3?

reply

Part 3 is definitely worth watching, just make sure you watch the unrated version (it's on the Vestron blu ray). It is very different from the first one though, it's basically a different take on what part 1 established but it's in the same universe. Part 2 is hit or miss, you may love it or you may hate it depending how you view it. It's more of a comedy than what part 1 was but it has some really good effects and zombie scenes, I wouldn't take the film too seriously and just view it as a fun, wacky late 80's zombie film. All 3 films are different from each other.

Thanks for the run down.

I like #2. It's really stupid and the kid actor's are awful. But that's why I like it. It's inept, silly, and fun. It never takes itself seriously. Neither should the viewer.

The OP is right though. The original is the best. Don't compare them.

#3 is more brooding. Getwokegobroke has a good opinion on it.

reply

Thanks. I might watch the 2nd one tonight.

reply

I liked 2 too. It's pretty silly.

I didn't watch 3 until a few years ago, and I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it was. It was a decent sequel.

Pressing play now. 👍

I really enjoyed part 2. I got a kick out of seeing our 2 cast members from the original, and in the same predicament. I also liked the doctor who reminded me of the mortician from the original. There were loads of pop culture references from the time with my favorite probably being the nod to Airplane (1980) at the end.

Was 2 the one with the Michael Jackson type zombie being electrocuted?

reply

Indeed it was. 😀

reply

Yeah this movie is freaking awesome, but the sequels are kind of a letdown.
