Deserved the Oscar maybe even more than Mask

Stolz make up is more obvious than Gray's. You can tell there's something behind the "mask". You can not tell Chiun is not some kind of Asian.

Good question, but the decision was as brilliant as controversial, since otherwise we wouldn't have Gray's brilliant comedic yet respectful (at least in my opinion) character performance. I always saw the actor just as that flamboyant Master of Ceremonies from the Cabaret. After seeing him in this (or rather "not seeing" him at all in this), I gained a whole new respect for him as an actor.

To be frank, that role and this one are the only two roles of that type I can think of that work.

He doesn't count. I'm specifically thinking of actors who portrayed other races well, despite the odds.

I'm not saying there aren't other good examples, just that none other comes to my mind at the moment.

What about Robert Downey Jr in "Tropic Thunder" ???

I watched the film with no previous knowledge of it, and I was amazed to find out, afterwards, that the actor who played Chiun ISN'T Asian!
