Why was he called Kalidor?
Why was his name changed from Conan to Kalidor?
shareRed Sonja originated in the Conan the Barbarian comics, but by 1985 the character had become popular enough to be owned by a company separate from the Conan the Barbarian people. This meant that although they could use the Hyborian Age setting, they couldn't use Conan or any of the other characters in the stories. The character Arnold played in the film is thus called Kalidor because they didn't have the rights to the Conan name.
It's the same reason Death's Head won't be seen in any Transformers movies: though the character first appeared in the Transformers comic, the character got his own series, and eventually split away from the Transformers.
That's just what I thought when watching this last night.

They can call him Lord Kalidor all they like. I know he is Conan so that's all that matters. Red Sonja is a Conan side story. That's how I see it. Conan on a journey across the land looking for adventure and meets up with Red Sonja.
"You're a funny man, Sully, I like you. That's why I'm going to kill you last."
Kull the Conqueror
Yor, Hunter From The Future
Two more for you.
I believe the film Kull (not Krull) The Conqueror is actually the planned thrid Conan film that never got made due to various legal issues. They changed the name, but couldn't get Arnie to do it or something. But it survives in whatever incarnation Kull is. I've yet to get a copy, though.
I also understood that Kalidor was either one of Conan's travelling aliases, or actually a title like Pope or Earl that indicated his status as a Lord of the land.
