The Fool was SO annoying!

Damn, I hated him in every sinlge scene. Now, I made the big mistake and watched this film in a bad german dubbing. His voice was VERY annoying. Maybe he is actually funny in japanese? Next time I'll watch it in japanese with subtitles. That's for sure.

I thought the fool was vely funny. He made me raff a rot!

The fool was my favorite character in a movie with awesome characters. That's how much I disagree with you (the OP that is).

reply

Why do you even bother watching it dubbed... Personally I considered him a big laugh

reply

Well, he was playing the fool. How was he supposed to act, like a stock broker?

reply

I thought he was very funny and sympathetic

I liked him. Especially in the mid to late part of the movie when Hidetora was psychologically falling to pieces and Kyoami was forced to try to hold things together and be the voice of reason amid all the chaos.

reply

He was hilarious! I can see Kevin Hart in a remake.

He played much the same role that Mifune played in Seven Samurai, namely, as a stand in for the audience. Both Seven Samurai and ran, while historical films, were also party allegorical of modern times. As a matter of fact, many Japanese criticized Mifune's performance as Kikuchiyo as being "too modern" and "anachronistic", but that was quite deliberate and intentional on Kurosawa's part.
