Is the Blu-Ray disk any good?

I've bought three different versions of this movie, and really don't want to buy another. Does the Blu Ray version have more definition than the previous DVDs?

reply

It is better than the DVD, but not by much.

my understanding is that the Studio Canal Blu Ray version was taken from the DVD transfer and not the original print. most reviews I've seen say wait till criterion remasters it from the original print before you buy it on Blu Ray.

reply

Except that the criterion release is out of print, since they've lost the rights to it.

reply

I actually have the Criterion release, and it does look exceptionally good. I'll hold off on a Blu-ray release.

Ran actually looks pretty good on Blu-ray. Colors seem a little more robust than the Criterion DVD - more to do with format than anything else. The English subtitles on the Blu-ray must have been translated by someone for whom English is a second language. Some pretty clumsy choices were made. Perhaps the translations are literal, but they could have used a little more finesse. The extras on the studio canal Blu-ray are pretty good, but not as good as criterion. I did prefer the package design on the Blu-ray over Criterion's DVD. My final verdict is they have the same level of quality - their pros and cons did not tip the scales. Unless a miracle occurs - this will most likely be the only Blu-ray release we will get for quite some time.

Thanks for this. Oh well. At least the film is available.
