shareThere are many things: the underlying sci-fi plot, Bruno Lawrence, the sparse but lovely orchestral music, the sound effects, the scenes showing how he goes mad by being on his own, seeing old New Zealand in it, and that ending! And more.
The producer's DVD commentary reveals a lot more about the low-budget/big ideas production which I also find impressive.
