Why are the comments on this movie so bad?

This movie isn't bad at all. Considering the hype about some other Mafia related movies it's quite entertaining. I refuse to take that Mafia family honour garbage too serious. It serves well as a comedy theme. Some Mafia films take themselves too serious. And they are boring, if you're not into that Mafia stuff. This one wasn't as boring as... no that would be a sacrileg.

I absolutely loved this movie. It's destined to be a classic. Mr.and Mrs. Smith looks like a loose ripoff of this John Huston gem.

My only gripe is the length. I saw it in the theater and had to take a break or two.

Other than that I thought it was a good movie. I hated to see the end turn out the way it did, but it gave the movie the dramatic tension it required. The guy who played the Don was perfect.

Well, i think it is an ok movie. the part when the lady from the elevator get shot was amusing in some strange way...I think it is a decent film. And how pretty was Anjelica Huston in it? ^0^

I missed it in 1985 when it came out and have just rented and watched it. I to, think it was a super film.
Half serious and half funny with Bill Hickey, excellent, as always as a entirely believeable mafia Don.

As usual, the rest of the cast was right on.

Worth a couple of hours of your time for sure

I haven't seen Prizzi's Honor in a while, but I didn't think it was that bad. Perhaps it's not among the top tier of John Huston's films, but the film overall is good.

"Dry your eyes baby, it's out of character."

This movie was awesome the Don cracked me up with his creepiness when he asks her to "have another cookie" and Jack's accent or whatever u call it is really good. I would say its obviously a comedy I guess the main comment takes mafia movies too seriously

This movie seems to be a bit of a satire on mafia films. Jack's character is hilarious, and William Hickey was great as the don. I liked the line about Art Deco.

I loved this film!!! I don't understand why so many people seem to have a problem with it. The Don was hysterically funny, and Jack's character was great, a perfect roll for him. Great script, too.

The comments for this movie are so bad because most people lack the sensitivity or the intelligence to understand it. The film plays so much on irony and understatement and the tragedies are so subtle that it just goes over their heads.

People like things they can understand, either macho glorifying overdone crap about the mob or laugh out loud crap farces about the mob. They can't handle the middle ground of a film that is subtle yet savage in its irony

They don't get Jack's performance as a half wit "will be" mob boss who for the first time has some hope in love and enlightenment and reads about Freudian analysis to his wife over the phone, while she for the first time introduces him (and I just loved his quizzical look there) to the joys of phone sex. These are just too subtle for them to get. They either want king-like mobsters like Paccino or farce caricatures like De Niro in analyse this, the violent, greedy, hypocritical and petty bullies in this film (what real mobsters are really like) are too nuanced for them to grasp.

Shame really because this idiot demographic is what has resulted in less and less of such great films being made nowadays.

I'm surprised you didn't end that attack with a "go watch a movie with car chases and explosions".

I think Prizzi's Honor is middle-tier Huston, probably on the low end. It has bright spots but it's an inconsistent film, has odd tonal shifts, and about a handful of superfluous scenes. I also didn't buy the attraction between Nicholson and Turner, not to mention Nicholson's acting (although he shows some terrific moments towards the end of the film).

Huston's "Fat City" is a far more nuanced and delicate film that requires a high level of sensitivity to appreciate, and is one of his masterpieces. So I don't think I like your accusation that those who didn't like every aspect of Prizzi's Honor are incapable of a slower and subtle type of film. It's a decent movie imo, but could've been handled a little better.

Or... they just didn't like it? I thought it was OK, but my problems with it don't stem from a lack of understanding (seriously, what was subtle about the phone sex scene?), I just thought it was lacking in some areas - most notably the terrible ending. It's not what happens that bothers me just how it transpires and how rushed the whole thing is. The movie spends a VERY long time building up these characters and then decides to rush the climax? Just unforgivable.

Plus, it was just flat out dull at times too. Nicholson has some great moments (particularly towards the end) but overall I'd have to say it's one of his worst performances.. and yes, I get that he was supposed to be a semi-parody of the usual movie mobster, I just didn't believe his character. Turner too seemed less convincing than usual - maybe it was a lack of screen chemistry.

I thought Prizzi's Honor was one of Jack's best performances. He was absolutely hilarious most of the time with his very expressive face. There were moments when I couldn't stop laughing at his expressions. There were a lot of comedic moments in this film. . .yes it was a drama, but it had many moments that made me laugh.
