Deleted Scenes?

I watched this movie years ago when I was a kid(watched it several times, actually) and a friend of mine got me thinking about this movie again so I rented it. After watching it, I couldn't help but think that the entire opening of the movie was left off the dvd! I remember watching it on TV and seeing an opening where Depp and Morrow win the trip to the resort off a cereal box. The cereal was called Horny Crunchies or something like that, haha. It even had a jingle to go with it. Anyway, do other people remember this scene I'm talking about?

And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.

that would have better if they had that opening on the dvd :(

There are definitely scenes that were cut out of the DVD. I remember an opening scene where Depp and Morrow's car broke down on the way to the resort and the surfer character (Mike?) gives them a ride. After that scene, the opening credits started rolling.

I remember watching this movie but it has been so long ago since I have seen it that some of the scenes that you are talking about I have forgotten about I hate to say it though.

During the End Credits when they show some of the characters from the film there is a short glimps of the deleted intro.
When they show Surfer Mike "the guy with the pointy hair" rising up from his car and offer Depp & Morrow a ride.

The whole intro was shown once on TV here in Sweden but was deleted on the VHS rental.

Do you know if there's an uncut Swedish sellthrough VHS available? "Privat område", that is. It should be!

I also remember that moment with Ben and his girlfriend during the shoot-out was extended in one television version.

Oh wow! I wish they left that on the DVD... that makes it sound even more funny! Mainly because you have to wonder how 2 teenage guys could afford that in the first place... there is a subtle allusion to why they are there in the first place... there's this little perverted kid named "George" who's trying to steal some woman's bikini top and Johnny & Rob notice him being a little turd, and bust him. Anyhow, a few minutes before that that same kid sees his mom and says "George dont go swimming after you eat or you'll get cramps!" So when Johnny busts him (and calls him by his name) he's like "George! What are you doing? Go take a swim .. blah blah blah..." and the kid is like "Mom told me not to or I'll get cramps"... and then Johnny tosses the kid in the pool. So that sort of alludes to that Johnny and Rob ended up there in the first place, they travelled with 'Mom' and got their own room, and were roaming free as teenagers try to do on every vacation.

reply

Right! On the DVD, the movie starts and the two of them are just walking around the pool, and you the viewer are asking yourself, how the hell did these two guys get to this resort in the first place? Well this deleted opening explains it all for you.

And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.

reply

Damn I wish theyd have left those on

Of course I'm mad you shot me in the as*!
I love 21 Jump Street ♥

reply

They should have left it on the DVD and I agree with you on that because you sort of question things on how this or that happened in the first place.

Does someone maybe have the deleted opening scene somewhere on a video or something I would love to see it.

reply

Unless a deleted scene contains Leslie Easterbrook nude--or at least topless--I'm not that interested. If not Ms. Easterbook, I'll settle for Dody Goodman. But that's it.

reply

There was also the Dodie Goodman nude gal-on-gal secene with Leslie Easterbrook, available only in the uncut European version.

I have the VHS and DVD of the film and they are identical. This one of my favorite movies from the 80's. Hearing about these extra scenes makes me wish I could see the TV version! I probably saw it on USA Up All Night before buying the VHS. Too bad I didn't record it.

For future reference:

Movies used to be distributed to theaters in 35mm "prints", on multiple reels, and those originated from distribution houses, and they got those copies from the studios in Hollywood, copied from "masters". When 70mm film eventually came to theaters, the film was on one VERY HEAVY reel, and required equipment to even lift it. All those copies and moving them around required extra advance work.

Some movies had none of their "prints" survive over the years before they were put on VHS and/or DVDs, (some earlier DVD releases had film defects on them), and now Blu-rays. Some films had their "master" damaged/destroyed, lost, or maybe even stolen, and only a "print" or two survived in the dark corner of some distributor's warehouse, or studio warehouse. BTW, those prints were returned to the distributor, or forwarded to another movie theater after each theater finished showing it. Eventually, all the "prints" were supposed to be destroyed, or returned to the studios, and that is exactly why eBay prohibits selling 35mm film movies. The film could also break, rip sprocket holes, jam (and burn some frames), or need to be forcefully removed from the projector mechanism. That means that not all copies of a "print" were the same after they had been shown.

That is part of the reason there are no deleted scenes or special features provided on VHS or some DVD releases. (Too cheap to find a 'whole' film and trailer? No "complete print" available?)

Also, the hotels and motels had "pay-per-view-movies" in the rooms, and a company, Spectradyne, provided 1-inch magnetic videotapes for that purpose (yes, back-in-the-day when a movie had to be chosen from a scheduled run time like theaters used).

So, what exactly was used to make the DVD and most recently released Blu-rays? Was the film "restored"? What exactly is meant by "restored"? Color balanced? Film artifacts (scratches, dust, defects in actual film) fixed? See where that goes? How about full frame, widescreen, enhanced for 16x9, or anamorphic widescreen? Is widescreen 1.85:1 of a film that was filmed in 2.35:1?

Oh, and you may have seen the term "flat film". That means no special lens/lenses are required to show it. Some films are compressed into a 35mm format, and widened by projector lenses.

I have seen at least four different versions/edits of the same movie in theaters, and still other edits on TV, (edited to run in the allotted time or for content, formatted to fit your screen, etc.).

Be happy you have the film at all.

Any news about the deleted scenes? I can't find it anywhere, not even more info about it.
