i used to live on the same street where the family lived

i came across this movie randomly on comcast on demand, and i love old cheesy 80s movies & kung-fu movies, so i thought, hey, what the hell

boy was i happily surprised to see that it was not only filmed in Houston, it was filmed by the old house i lived in during college in the sixth ward, over on state street. i lived there about 20 years after the movie came out, but small world i suppose

anyway, that would be a terrible place to open up any kind of restaurant, much less a japanese one, especially in the 80s

Thanks for your personal confirmation of that. I was wondering where this was filmed. The parts that were meant to be in Japan looked like L.A., and some of the "L.A." scenes seemed to be filmed in L.A., but most of the rest seemed to be in some very depressed part of Missouri or somewhere like that. The IMDB locations page says Houston, TX, so I guess it is.

Houston cannot pass for any part of L.A. in any way. It doesn't even remind me of Houston here. The big tell is how there are loads of trees (try to find some in downtown L.A.!) and all of them are 100% winter bare, just sticks. That never happens in L.A..
