huge disappointment when I saw this.

I was a big DAVID HARE fan at the time this came out,I had seen STREEP in lots of stuff and thought she was great.

But this film was a mess,STREEP was not convincing as the lead, the film looked great but the historical feel was wrong, hippy types in 1950s London for example.

The theme ,the decline of British idealism in the post war period, was badly handled.

The original stage production had KATE NELLIGAN in the lead and it is a shame that the film had Streep instead,I think she is a great actress but I never felt she got the British context of the story.

reply

Nelligan would have been great, or Helen Mirren.

... I never felt she got the British context of the story.
Is their a distinctly British way of going mad?🐭

reply

LOL, who knows. But I agree with the OP. She never felt English to me. Not one bit. And that doesn't usually affect me in other films when Streep plays a character from another country with a foreign (to me) accent.

reply

Never felt English? How does English feel? I'm dying to know.

As for Kate Nelligan? I saw her on stage in the Play and frankly, you wanted to strangle Susan.

reply

Not American. She came off as American imo.
