The Soccer/Wig-Ripping Scene

I've had this scene kicking around in the back of my mind for years, and could have sworn it was some kind of nightmare I'd had as a kid that stuck with me. Imagine my surprise when I came across the movie all these years later and realized it's real. I remembered it as being absolutely terrifying, which, I suppose, it was for me at the time.

How is it that a movie like this can stick with you for so long? It's weird, sure, but it's not exactly a well known or complex story.
