Very true, I think Pale Rider is getting better with age.

I dunno, I don't think this movie really compares to most other Eastwood westerns. I think some of the scenes fall flat, and it kinda seems like a movie that could have delivered given the material, but seemed like a dumbed down version of everything else Eastwood has done with an ending that seemed like a mixture between Looney Tunes and Outlaw Josey Wales. I just prefer Unforgiven or the Leone movies when it comes to suspense and storytelling, Pale Rider is towards the bottom of my list.

agree. it's a little underated.

I actually do agree that it gets better with age. When I saw it when it first came out, it seemed to me to be a pretty standard, run of the mill Western with little to nothing that hadn't been done before.

But it's HOW it's done that's so cool. The sets and costumes are fantastic, as are the music and cinematography. It's all about mood. Everyone in the film is excellent in their roles. I have to give especial credit to Moriarty as Hull - Eastwood's Preacher sets the mood of the film and captures the imagination more than anyone else, but Moriarty is fantastic in this film, very believable.

That was well said. I'd agree with all of that.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

I don't know if it's underrated. Everyone I know (save for a few people here) who's seen this film thinks it's one of the great westerns. It gets a little hokey at the end, but is still a good watch.

I hadn't seen it for awhile, and then it came on the History Channel a few weeks ago. I don't know about underrated, but it's a good film. I also think the country is beautiful, so that helps.

I've been watching more and more Eastwood Westerns lately and out of the ones I've seen I really enjoyed it.

I wouldn't put it up there with any of the Leone Trilogy, but I liked the story / film better than

Two Mules for Sister Sara, Joe Kidd, High Plains Drifter, and Outlaw Josey Wales.

Granted I still have to watch Unforgiven.

Bought an Eastwood box set a few months ago - Pale Rider, The Outlaw Josey Wales and Unforgiven. Had only seen Unforgiven when I bought the dvd. Hadn't opened the dvd until tonight - just watched Pale Rider. Loved it - 8/10

Before just now watching Pale Rider I'd seen a good number of Eastwood films, both starring him and directed by him - Dirty Harry, Dollars trilogy, Escape from Alcatraz, Unforgiven, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Letters and Flags, Gran Torino, Hereafter, J. Edgar.

Been a big fan of Clint ever since I watched my first, and still my favourite, Clint film - Dirty Harry. Enjoyed films directed by him up until Gran Torino too. I didn't think Hereafter or J. Edgar were bad, but just not quite so good.

But yeah I thought Pale Rider was very good. ...although... what even happened to the giant (Richard Kiel) and LaHood Jr. (Chris Penn)?

Chris Penn died in 2006.

From his IMDB bio here at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001606/bio:

Throughout his life, Penn had had battles with heart disease and multiple drug use. He was found dead in his home on January 24, 2006. He was only forty years old.

Pale Rider is one of my favorite westerns. I like the elements of reality and the characters. It was great to see John Russell again. He was one of those dependable character actors who worked with Clint Eastwood on other films and was busy until his passing. Please correct me if necessary but I read somewhere that Clint Eastwood wanted Lee Van Cleef in the Stockburn part. I could see him in the part. I wonder why it did not happen. Pale Rider has one of the best final shootout sequences of any western.

reply

I haven't heard that before, but that would've been awesome, I can definitely see Lee Van Cleef in this film. I dunno, perhaps it didn't happen because people would see unintentional similarities to the other westerns he made with Clint in the 60's (For a Few Dollars More, & The Good The Bad and The Ugly). Or maybe he wasn't available at the time they made this movie. Either way, I think he would've been good in the part.
