I estimate the chunk of gold found in the creek by 'Spider' would weigh about 40Kg (88lb) and yet the miner can twirl it around on his fingertips?

One of the many ultra-stupids this movie contains. He handles it like it weighs a few pounds, a lead bullet splits it in half... AND suddenly, it's worth much less because it's now in two pieces.

It wasn't a PURE piece of gold. It was a rock with a big vein of gold in the rock.

Yep. A guy even says that Spider found a big piece of aggregate loaded with nuggets. It was mostly rock, with gold throughout. If it wasn't, it wouldn't have shattered like that when Stockburn shot it.
