Problem with casting

Redford was much too old for Streep. He is just a pretty face, not an actor. BTW, the same is true for Bridges of Madison County. Eastwood is so vain to cast himself against her. It was embarrassing.
She, as usual, had to carry both movies.
But the old boy network put him ahead of her in the opening credits of OOA.

Pollock just couldn't do without Redford.

Even if he's nothing of an English aristocrat, and unable to make the slightest effort to make himself sound like the British.
It shifted the sad and hopeless situation for the characters representing real Karen and Denys no one knows where to.

Robert Redford is only 13 years older than Meryl Streep. When this film was released he was 49 and she was 36, hardly a shocking age gap.

I also strongly disagree with your assessment of Redford's acting, so I must leap to his defense.

He most certainly was a pretty face in his youth, and I think he still looked great in "Out of Africa" at 49, but he most certainly is an actor. I think he gives a wonderful performance in this film, as he did in "The Way We Were", "The Sting", "Butch & Sundance", "The Natural", "Jeremiah Johnson", "All the President's Men", "Havana" etc. Pretty nice list of credits there for a guy who is allegedly "not an actor".

There's more to acting than emoting and putting on fake noses. Redford is similar to the great Spencer Tracy, in that he is skilled at subtle, naturalistic acting, which is much more difficult than it looks.

very nicely said here. I agree that Robert Redford is a wonderful actor in fact I think he still is one of the finest and certainly better some of the actors out there now
