I was enamored with Farah....

What a wonderful character he was, played so beautifully by Malick Bowens! I have seen the movie so many times b/c of my love for it, but I cannot keep myself from breaking into tears when the Baroness asks Farah to say her name---"You are Karin, Msabu", and stares at her with respect and devotion. What a marvelous scene. Always wondered if her deerhound went back to Denmark with her for the last time. In the movie, it shows her petting the dog, but she doesn't have him when she boards the train. Hope she didn't leave him behind....

I also love the scene when Karen returns from Denmark, after her illness and asks him....."Are you well Farah"? Also Farah's curt reply, expressing his dislike for Blix, when he is asking after Karen and he ses, "She can come soon enough". He has nothing but deep respect for her and likewise Karen for Farah. He is full of wisdom too:

"Msabu's bleeding. She does not have this ox. This lion is hungry. He does not have this ox. This wagon is heavy. It doesn't have this ox. God is happy, msabu. He plays with us".

A film, full of wonderful, exquisite, spiritual and layered moments.

I completely agree. He was loyal to her and I actually think he was in love with her too and admired her strength, courage and character. Bowens gives him a quiet dignity and I love the scene where Karen is sick and he is nursing her.

Thank you all so much for your wonderful replies----glad to see "Farah" has to many fans! If I remember correctly from the book, Karen corresponds through the years with Farah; it was a life-long friendship.

That's lovely to hear.

At the end when Farah tells her the fire must be very big so that he can see it and find her, well I just lost it. In fact, I'm crying right now thinking about it. What a magical, respectful relationship they had.
