First time vi

I've always loved the soundtrack, heck, I've owned the vinyl for years... it's beautiful... but so often soundtracks are better than the films they belong to, so I believe I can maintain a modicum of objectivity... the first thing I notice is how beautifully filmed it is... the camera work, the colors, the style, the mood, the cinematography is all gorgeous, breathtaking even, harking back to a romantic, over-romanticized time, granting the viewer the beauty of escape. It is not enough by itself, but it's a good start.

I mean... wow!

Recognized Klaus Maria Brandauer immediately from the 1983 James Bond film, Never Say Never Again as Largo.

Robert Redford playing himself really, a true environmentalist... Meryl Streep the aristocrat who comes to Africa to grow coffee, she wants to compete in the corporate world of men I guess, but she is like a fish out of water... but she cares, she clearly wants to make a difference.

I do believe anyone who finds this movie boring, hasn't matured to appreciate real story telling, nuance, and depth of purpose that simmers in the soul... one has to appreciate beauty to get this movie... it's a romantic, but romanticized. A human story, about our place in the scheme of things, refinement toward the preservation of earth and man's unique gifts.

Robert Redford could have been a great Indiana Jones, and I imagine Keira Knightley in Meryl Streep's role here.

The script is absolutely beautiful.

"It's an odd feeling... farewell.
There is some envy in it.
Men go off to be tested
for courage.
If we're tested at all,
it's for patience...
for doing without...
for how well
we can endure loneliness.
But I had always known that.
It didn't require a war."
