What's with the hate for this film?

Is it perfect? No. But it most certainly not the worst film ever made. It's a hell of a lot better than the movie released today. So why the hate?

Not sure that I know what you mean. Where is this hate coming from? The critics and actors that I respect, hold this film in high regard.

It's about this board. Lots of trolls ask and ask again:

"This film is horrible. Why they gave it Oscar???"

They like to stir our indignation and get some attention.

Your's is the first post on this board that I read so I wasn't aware of the negativity until I read a lot of the preceding comments. I try to remember that taste in anything is subjective. There were some points made that I understood, however for me, I'll never forget seeing this on the big screen, not knowing too much about the real characters and crying madly at the end when she and Farah say their goodbyes. The front of my blouse was soaked with tears because I didn't realize the story was as sad as I found it, but I could not stop the tears. I did not have any Kleenex.

It's because it's simply an average movie with lots of flaws that was awarded the best movie of 1985 Oscar. So, because of that Oscar, a lot of people come around to it and expect something better than it actually was.

But 1985 was a weak year for films, aside from a couple of non-Oscar bait movies, so this win is just kind of meh.

I happen to like this film, but I also agree to disagree with posters who don't. I saw it in 1985 at the Cinerama Dome, so perhaps I was blown away by the photography and aerial shots on the huge screen. I went out and got the soundtrack album, because I loved the music. So I agree I might have been manipulated by it. Perhaps it doesn't hold up as well as it did for me back then, so I will be re-watching it again soon and posting my own review. I doubt I'll hate it, even if I'm a bit bored by it.

The purpose of the IMDB is for people to post and save their reviews as their own journal of movie going, and to guide others into deciding if they will watch it or avoid it. Several movies that have gotten 10's I gave 3's or 4's to, and vice versa. I'd rather have a venue to read differing opinions and express mine rather than loose the privilege of offering my opinion. I just don't feel the need to call anybody out on disagreeing with me on a certain title or actor or director, and wish the trend of being "offended" by somebody disagreeing with you over something as trivial as a movie would just go away. When debates over serious topics turn ugly and violent, then freedom of speech starts to wear a little thin.

"Great theater makes you smile. Outstanding theater may make you weep."
