Partially filmed in Meaford, Ontario, Canada

This movie freaked me out as a kid -- very dark for a Disney movie. Anyhow, for all you trivia junkies, it was partially filmed in Meaford, Ontario, Canada, which is otherwise a hole-in-the-wall (trust me, I went to public school there)

Look at the money Ginny's holding after she's purchased the cap stove. It has the picture of Sir John A. Macdonald on it, the 1st prime minister of Canada. His picture is on the $10 bill. Though the real bill is purple and the bill(s) in the movie look black/white or like fake Canadian movie money.

it's real Canadian money... they looked a bit different then, it was a very light purple, it's the real deal :)

I'll have to watch the film, but I'm guessing it's real, too.

After all, what the heck would be the point of getting fake money?

By the way, part of this was also filmed in a little neighbourhood in Scarborough, Ontario. That's where they filmed the street they lived on and the house. It's not far from Kennedy Common. My wife lived in the area before we were married and many years ago I took a stroll down that street. No mailbox, but I think I found the tree Gideon sat in.

It really doesn't have a small-town feel when you're there, but it came off as being a small-town neighbourhood on screen.

I watched it today. I don't think that's Canadian money. It was tough to get a good look, but it looked like American money to me.

While the movie was entirely filmed in Ontario, I believe it was supposed to be set in the US. (Note that Harry's car has US plates and the University of Tulsa sticker on the window, and Ginnie's letter to Santa has a return address of Little Rock, Arkansas.)

There's really not much to suggest it's set in Canada, actually, other than the bike friend wearing a Blue Jays shirt -- though Blue Jays logos appeared frequently in 70s and 80s films with US settings filmed in Toronto -- Labatt's must have been paying for product placement.

I have a big screen TV, it's DEFINITELY a big pile of Canadian tens.. I could even see John A's face :)
