Like the part where Ginny is walking the street and all the christmas lights start to turn off with that rally dark, harsh music. And then the part where little Abbie running down the street calling for Gideon and we hear "Hey" and see a man approaching her but the scene cuts leaving up wondering if it's Gideon or some creep. Not to mention the whole plot of Jack getting murdered and then the kids getting kidnapped.
shareI was really surprised when we get the bank robbery and the mom thinks her children are dead, and the dad gets shot. Definitely not the Hallmark-esque Christmas movie I was expecting. Still very schmaltzy but yeah definitely a smidge darker than usual.

that's why I loved this movie so much even as a kid. It had some realism to it and wasn't just cheesy like all the other Hallmark movies. And when the Christmas lights go out that signals the beginning of "it's a wonderful life" esqu sequence.
