Where did the check come from???

At the end, when she gives her husband the check.... weren't they poor? Where did she get the money?? Or did I miss a scene?

Earlier in the film when the dad wants to buy nice presents for the kids, the mother states that all they have is $5000 in savings and what if someone gets sick etc so they can't waste it on presents..
