MOVIE FILMED WHERE I LIVE

It's so funny! Most of the filming for this film was done in Owen Sound, Collingwood and Meaford, Ontario, Canada (all mall towns). I'm from Owen Sound, and I think it's hilarious that it took me 18 years to figure out that the city hall in this movie is MY city hall lol.

this movie was filmed in canada? weird.

Well I knew it was filmed in Canada by some little things such as the mail box (where Ginny mails the letter to Santa) being red instead of blue. I grew up near Toronto so those things just kind of stood out. Glad you mentioned where it was filmed though - I was wondering exactly where.

I thought some streets looked like the Streetville section of Mississauga, outside Toronto. Am I right?
It's Canadian roots are obvious if you look at the cast - Sarah Polley, Gary Basaraba, Wayne Robson, Elias Koteas, Jan Rubes are all Canadian. So is the late director, Philip Borsos, who directed THE GREY FOX.

Look at the credits at the end of the movie. The include Scarborough, Ontario as well as Owen Sound, Collingwood and Meaford. In fact, I thought they mentioned a street, Kirk Avenue (it went by so fast), but there isn't one in Scarborough. Maybe it said Kirk's service station, as somebody said in another comment.

The pretty teenager who is grabbed in the bank by the robber was a student of mine at Jarvis Collegiate in Toronto. A really sweet girl. She went on to work in the film industry off-camera.

No way your from Owen Sound. I am too. It's nice to have had a movie made in a small city and little small towns outside of the US. and there was a scene just outside Tara,Ontario as well.

I remember the corner of 7th Avenue East and 6th Street East (Kirk's Service Station) being shut down and that was the only way into my subdivision. People had to sit in traffic for 15-20 minutes at a time while they shot scenes.

It was really cool to see the gas station in the movie when it finally came out. That was my corner store growing up. I think I was 6 or 7 years old when the movie was shot.

It's great to see people from OS commenting on this. I was born a year after this was made, but my parents said it was a pretty big deal. There were shots of city hall in the film, that's all I can remember (I haven't seen the film in a very long time.)

I remember watching a scene in front of city hall and seeing IDA drugstore beside it. I think it's a photo place now.

No it actually just snows that much there. I remember reading in a Guinness World Records book when I was a kid that it (Owen Sound) was one of the snowiest cities in North America. I'm sure that list has been changed since.

I am originally from O/S as well and this was filmed when I was in my early teens. I was actually standing down at the City Hall as an extra for the lighting of the Christmas Tree for that scene. It was great to watch the movie. The grocery store was the store from Meaford (Medford in the movie...lol). For years I had the movie on VHS and it was a tradition for me to watch the movie on Christmas Eve with my kids....now the movie is no good and I would love to find a DVD of it. They still televise around Christmas though.

I'm guessing a mall town is a town with a big mall or something, eh?
