Ginny's horrible padded beige coat

Wasn't it just looooovely? :P Poor Mary Steenburgen being made to look like a big fudge polar bear! I know the Graingers were supposed to be poor and it was the 80s but that's no justification for such a monstrosity! Just had to vent about that ;)

I hear you sabbaroo. That coat is really nasty.

WEIRD. I was just thinking of exactly this coat!!!

A clothing store in Brooklyn, NY -- Brooklyn Industries -- is selling a coat like the one you're talking about, right now, for $148:

When a friend came to my apartment last week wearing the "lilac" version of this coat, I said, "WOW. That's a lot like Mary Steenburgen's coat from One Magic Christmas." She didn't know what I was talking about.

I look forward to sharing OMC with my friend and her coat sometime in the next two weeks.

Haha I noticed the coat...I thought it was pink though. LOL maybe I just think that because my mum had a pink one kinda like it in the 80's :-p It reminded me of my mum's one...and yes I cringed...it made me feel sorry for them because they're poor :-(

I noticed her clothes too! Especially since some of it came back into style like her shearling hat (they're selling one very similar to it at the Gap) and her boots. Lindsay Lohan or some starlet could wear the exact same outfit but with huge sunglasses and I bet some people would think it was cool.

the coat is nasty, but that was the style in the 80's. my mom had one when i was a kid, and my family was middle class, hardly poor.

hmm I think it was the battered old video version I originally had that made it look beige, it's definitely pink now on the dvd. doesn't make it much better though haha, so funny to see other people taking time to post just about the awfulness of a coat! ^^

I liked her coat. I would like to have a coat just like hers.

Agreed, the coat looked terrible, but that was what they looked like in those days, if you wanted something really warm when the temperatures dropped way below zero.

LOL really , as it was back out in 90/91, as what were called ravers people into dance music, proper dance music and not the handbag sh it in most clubs wore them, then again in the states 05 proof look at that film with Mark Wahlberg four brothers as the black dude he fights has one on, and now Hilfiger and Diesel have them out again. Also most of the 80's styles, horrible styles as people spent the 90's saying as much is back out again, look at the current range of jeans most girls/women are wearing 80's style.

My mom had the exact same coat, only hers was turquoise. And I would be willing to bet it's still somewhere in a closet in her house. She always said if you waited long enough, anything could come back in style. :)

I didn't think it was that bad, especially considering the era.

I had more issues with her clothes. She looked like she was dressing like a 1950s granny with pants. Couldn't stand those blouses and cardigans, save for her holiday outfit in the last part of the movie. And that hat she wore outdoors wasn't all that great either.

I can't say much for the supermarket uniform because it was the 80s, and a lot of uniforms people wore for various jobs looked really crappy, depending on what business it was. Heck, we have some uniforms today in the 2010s that look really dorky.
