Are there any other films about the military in the pre-First World War Austro-Hungarian empire? I do remember seeing Colonel Redl years ago but I have some vague memory of another film which had a similar background.

Thanks for responding. The more I look at your link the more I think that The Desert of the Tartars was the film I saw many years ago and partially forgot. The date of the film also seems to fit. I wonder if it's possible to get hold of this movie?

I forgot to add that I've ordered Colonel Redl from my rental company LoveFilm and it should be arriving any day now.

"Mayerling" is a film I'd love to see again. I have it on a reserve with LoveFilm but I may buy a copy. I'd heard of the "Sissi" film before and from your links it sounds to be just my type of thing. I'm seriously thinking of taking your advice and buying it as at Christmas present for myself.

I'm sure that I will love "Sissi"; it is the type of film I adore. I watched "Ludwig" fairly recently and enjoyed it very much. I have always been intrigued by the story of Elisabeth of Austria, her son Rudolf and the Mayerling tragedy. Sissi was a very beautiful and fascinating woman who seemed to have the same effect on people as the late Princess Diana.
LoveFilm is a company which rents out DVDs and sends them through the post. I pay a fixed sum each month (about £8) and they send me DVDs by return of post. I have borrowed lots of films and TV serials from them. Here is the link:

Alas, the Hungarians were not so lucky: only a year later they were fighting the Soviet army tanks in the streets of Budapest.
You know I'm not sure if any director has tackled the actual battle for Hungary during '56. I thought Szabo, the Hungarian director of Redl, would do it but he hasn't.

Thanks for the links....Soemthing tells me that revolution has been hard to put to the screen perhaps for the politics of it (today's and yesterday's) and it could be still raw in Hungarian society.
