Sure it wasn't as great as the first movie but this movie had it's funny moments like when they were in England that english guy sounded like he was talking in gibberish because he had food in his mouth and Clark was cheacking his language machine thingy to see what that guy was saying and Rusty said "dad he's speaking english" hahaha also the part poking fun at the French, i heard French are rude to Americans so i thought them making fun of the French was funny. The part when they were in Germany that German couple saying in german "who the hell were they?" cracked me up. I thought this was much better that the stupid christmas movie definately.
The first one was pretty good, this one was a big dropoff but at least had some funny bits, every one afterward was total garbage. I couldn't stomach 20 minutes of the Vegas one.
The humour in the original, while broad, was at least character driven. In European Vacation, the Griswalds are just a set of sitcom cliches accompanied with sitcom level jokes. Not to mention that set piece at the end with the kidnapping and Italian mobsters was completely tacked on and unnecessary. EV has some redeeming qualities, but the original had so much more going for it.
I also never quite got all the hate this movie gets. Sure, like the vast majority of sequels, European Vacation is a case of diminishing returns. What made the first Vacation movie really work was the slow turn into insanity that Clark took over the course of the story. Here, it's just corny setup after corny setup. That's not to say there aren't laughs, I think EV has plenty of funny bits... But it's more about gags then it is the characters.
Of course, I'm pretty easy on goofy comedies... I didn't hate Vegas Vacation either... Not a great movie, but thought it had enough chuckles to justify the running time.
i don't get all the negative views about this movie, and critics gives it really unrealistic low rating, of course the "christmas vacation" is the classic, right, but except for the trip to france i enjoy watching this as much as the first movie, the fourth is past chevy chase's prime with awful jokes and some odd failed attempt at drama, ellen is a knockout in that though, and still it is enjoyable to see them together for another vacation and i tune into it whenever it airs, and there i stop, the 2014 movie is the worst movie i've ever seen and the terrible "christmas vacation 2: cousin eddie's island adventure" is a masterpiece in compare. the opening scene in this is just weird, that game show incidence looks similar to a "family guy" scenario though with reversed parts as louis kisses the game show host. chevy chase makes some great slapstick performances in this, i didn't realise until lately how much of his style revolves around physical humour, i found out after he appeared in a documentary that he is one of many inspired by jerry lewis. the british actors they run into brings some of the best moments of this movie, and it's sort of strange how the resident from "fawlty towers" looks exactly the same even though this is over a decade after that series started in 1975. as this aired again i found i had to change the channel when they arrived in france, the scenes are just too obnoxious and uncomfortable to watch.
chillin on beach as you came back again,
suddenly found myself sailin on your hot waves,
tryin to keep cool but cant escape,
in curves struggle keepin on highway,
you caught brought me back to shore,
as a beach party you throw.
I love this film! For some strange reason I donβt like any of the other ones.. which even I find strange. Also the guy has a strong cockney accent which is hard to understand in the UK. Heβs a comedian as well as a writer and actor.
I think Iβll watch that today! xo
