still enjoyable after 29 years

I think this is a very enjoyable, even delightful movie with good acting by everyone. Sally Fields is especially skillful, and Garner is also a pro, it goes without saying. The ex-husband, the young mother who shows up, and the boy are all satisfying to watch--no one is a dud. The romance wasn't quite believable, but that can be overlooked, since it is really a small part of the movie. By that, I mean that while they are together a lot, it seems more like a friendship--and I wish it had stayed that way.

It's an old fashioned romance, which is why it's called Murphy's Romance. He is showing Sally Field's character that he's worthy of a deep seated partnership that may include sex.

He is not the young swaggering buck like her ex-husband, but more traditional in comport, though regrettably "progressive" in politics.

He doesn't hit on her, which she probably doesn't get. And where he values her, and her body, he actually just really likes her for herself.

This is the way romances used to be.

I don't see a friendship. I seee a steamy romance. I first saw this movie when I in middle school and I find time to watch it every time it is on. I feel the chemistry between Garner and Fields. One example that stands out is when she asks Murphy to fix the toilet after her ex husband tried but failed. She's nervously talking and when they are finally in the bathroom she blurts out "he's just staying here, that's it." The pause and look on Murphy face said it all. The romance was the real star and the rest of the cast came second. This post just hit me with a strong desire to watch the move lol

I totally agree. Without making it sound too crude, this is a very subtle and elegant movie about two adults who basically want to negotiate a way to start sleeping together.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

Never cry over spilt milk, it could've been whiskey.

Just saw it and the only real problem is that the storyline is quite predictable.

Also it felt more like the pilot for a TV show than a movie somehow.
