references to other films - mild spoilers

I'm kind of surprised no one has brought this up yet. There were some nice allusions to other films.

I picked up on these...

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - several asylum scenes

Invaders From Mars - The ship lands behind a fence, behind a wooded area -- very clearly imitating the most familiar scene in the 1953 version of Invaders From Mars.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - the musical tones, as well as the spaceship in the end.

Also there were space scenes clearly made to be similar to some of the standard spaceship-in-space shots that have become so common ever since Alien or thereabouts.

Did anyone spot more?

I also noticed the Close Encounters reference.

The end reminded me a little of E.T., with Bernard being left behind.

Did you just watch this on movieplex?

reply

Not sure what cable channel it was on. I recorded it on DVR and watched it soon after (today).

Oh, I see. I just watched it for the first time. I actually laughed out loud at some parts.

I liked it, too. And I'm not big on British comedy.

There's also an influence of Star Wars. At the begining you see the space ship coming into shot above the camera making its way deeper into space.

Great film, very fun and never tire of it. May watch it again tonight!

1. You've already covered this with the mention of Close Encounters, but in case anyone didn't catch it - the Francois Truffaut character (Lacombe) from CE3K is parodied here as Trussaut

2, not a reference but a re-use of props - the spacesuit was a leftover from Outland.

I'm sure there are more, but I've just seen it or the first time!
