I don't get it - who knew Saga was a girl?

The one kid with the green hair knew. Is Saga a girl's name? Did everyone know, except for the other soccer team? Wouldn't the other team also have been from the same village? Did the girl who invited Ingemar to the party know? I'm not sure who knew and who didn't know.

And maybe more to the point, how could she get away with it? It's not as if she suddenly woke up when she was 7, got a haircut, and put on some pants, and voila! Everyone in the village would have to know.

I asked the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

After one viewing so far...I'm guessing that everyone knew she was a girl, and accepted the fact that she was a tomboy and allowed her to "pretend" to be a boy. "Pretending" to be something one's not is a running theme in the movie. No one seemed surprised to see her wearing a dress (but that wasn't the point of the first scene where she's shown doing so).

Well, it couldn't have been everyone, because they were concerned that she would get kicked off the soccer team if the other team found out.

The people who knew her, knew. That was the point. They knew everyone's little quirks and accepted them without judgement. The visiting soccer team of course would not know. And Saga wasn't sure who knew. But nothing was a secret for long in this little town.

i didn't think she was concerned about being kicked off the soccer team for being a girl. I think that she knew life would become too complicated once she had breasts because all the males would focus on her "boobies" instead of her ability to play soccer. She knew that she would lose the freedom a tomboy enjoys until she has to grow up.

the book says that everyone knew that she was a girl, but she didn't like being a girl. they didn't want the other teams to know she was a girl, not because she would get kicked off the team but because they were embarrassed that their best, toughest player was actually a girl!
Saga is a girls name, again, according to the book

A five years late reply: Yes, Saga is a girls name.
