Why the Green Hair?

It was never really explained why the kid's hair was green? Was it intentional? Did he dye it that color? What's up with that?

reply

It was due to swimming in the copper tub. It reacted to his hair causing it to turn green. I think, since he mentions it in the film, that his hair was dyed green for the film and not an actual reaction. I recall seeing a making of this film and they spoke about it.

Oh, OK. Thanks!

Wouldn't this be harmful?
I'd hate to think the poor kid was being slowly poisoned or blinded or something.

BTW, I love the scene where the actor splashes water on the kids passing by - he's obviously really having a ball!

It's absolutely harmful! This happened to both med and my cousin, were swedish, when we swam in a regular swimming pool! :)

My grandparents have told me that they knew a boy when they were young. The boy was born with red hair, but his mother had put lye in his hair to give it another colour.
The boy was the result of an affair with a married man who refused to recognize the boy as his own. The man had red hair and the mother didn´t wanted people to see the similarities betweem the boy and the father (but my grandparent said that everybody knew about it, a small society)

I started thinking about it because of in this movie Ingemar´s uncle Gunnar is a redhead. So maybe the greendhaired boy Manne is actually Gunnars
illegitimate son.
