Found very cheap Criterion edition

I went to Fry's Electronics and they had the brand new Criterion edition for only $14.99.

what a steal!

reply

I hate you, haha!

reply

hahaha, hate me all you want, but love the movie. esp for $14.99!!!

reply

I was just joking haha. I'm still looking for a relatively cheap price for this movie. Money's tight.

reply

like I said... try Fry's Electronics. they have a separate shelf for just Criterion dvds.

reply

We don't have Fry's here. I'm in Canada. Which is the cheapest place to get Criterion DVD's online? I've been searching really hard...

reply

Have you looked at amazon.com or the other amazon markets?

reply

Yeah, and they're good. I always have to take shipping into consideration, though. Shipping rates to Canada can be ridiculous (and for no real reason either than it's a different country). I'm probably closer to some of these places than other areas of the U.S. I have checked criterion's official site and they seem to have reasonable prices. Have you ever ordered from them online?
I used to order from criteriondvd.com but they've stopped selling brand new releases I think, which is too bad.

reply

I'm not sure if you can order from Barnes and Noble in Canada, but Mishima and all other Criterions are currently 50% off, which means you can pick up Mishima for $18-$20.

reply

I wasnt aware that the amazon shipping rates to Canada were so steep. I never pay s&h, because I always select the super saver shipping, and go over the min, which I believe is $20. S&H has been a non-factor for me.
That's why I regret signing up for Columbia House DVD club. Their s&h is high, and they will even ship a SE or Collector's Ed without the cover. That's terrible service, esp for a collector like myself.
I am not familiar with criterion online sales, but I imagine its up to par, as long as the price is right.

If there is Barnes & Nobles in Canada, then I suggest what that other poster suggested - the 50% off deal.

But look, Mishima is an amazing movie. I love that I paid $14.99 for it, but now that I know the quality of that release, I would pay alot more to own it.

I have paid a lot more for a lot worse movies. Thats the point. Go for it.

reply

We do have Barnes and Noble in Canada so that's a great suggestion! Thank you. And I agree, I have paid lots of money for movies that were sort of disappointing, but I know Mishima's worth it. 50% off? Holy crap.

reply

UPDATE: I officially ordered Mishima from Barnes & Noble. It came to 26.78 (that is with shipping and handling to Canada). Thanks for the help!

I was sold after I went to deepdiscount and compared final prices. They have a really good sale going on too, but shipping to Canada is almost 10 dollars which is ridiculous.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to watching Mishima.

reply

awesome. A Criterion for less than $30 is always a bargain. Much more so for Mishima.

Hmmm, when you get to finally watch it, you are going to have to decide which soundtrack/narration to select: the original, shrader's narration, or the Roy Scheider track....

reply

Which do you reccomend? I'll end up watching everything. One of the qualities I look for in a Criterion release is all of the special features, and I take advantage of them. I think I'd be interested in Schrader's (although I heard it's the same commentary they used for the 2001 DVD release). Doesn't matter. What do you think though?

reply

I believe Schrader's prefers us to use the Roy Scheider version.

reply

Thank you again.

What other Criterion's do you favor? I have about 50 now.

reply

Days of Heaven by Terrence Malick, and The Last Temptation of Christ by Scorsese are two must-own Criterion editions!

reply

I have Last Temptation of Christ.

I've actually never seen Days of Heaven, but was this close to ordering it when it was a new release. I have seen The Thin Red Line by Malick and it's one of my favorite films.

reply

If you're from Canada, get it from Amazon, preferably along with several other rarities you might want, to maximize any purchase or shipping discount.
