How come this never got an Oscar nod (especially camera + Phillip Glass)

Sure, the movie has certain aspects that certain Academy voters might hate, but camera (by which I mean cinematography) and Phillip Glass' soundtrack are especially good and there's nothing odd or controversial about these categories.

To put it simply - they screwed up. Cinematography and score in Mishima are among the strongest ever. But the Oscars are all quite political; if Mishima was a big box office success, or even a modest art-house hit, they probably would've recognized it. But it tanked in the States, so there you go.
