Anyone else bummed on the ending?

The thing is, I don't think it's a bad ending at all. I'm really into it. I just get bummed out that John and Gene probably wont ever see each other again. Am I the only one?

Dear Fallchildrenx,
I agree with you that having Gene and Bunny leave is very sad to say the least. The friendship between Jonathan and Gene is the root of this film.Having
Gene leave speaks volumes to all of us that have been forced to say goodbye to
someone that we've cared about. In this case,Jonathan has become close friends with the beautiful Bunny as well...so that's doubly painful.
However, having Gene and Bunny leave is in a large way what makes this movie so good because they are people that we care about.Think about it,who do you miss more? The people who are still around you that you love or the people that you are forced to say goodbye to(maybe forever)that you love.
This movie deals with emotion and loss in a very realistic way so that we all can identify with it and have such high regard for it.
To Better Days,
BRAD

gene leaving, while sad, is necessary because john doesnt need him anymore. he has grown

This whole movie reminded me of me and my friend, cept the end was reversed. He was visiting my state for 2 yrs. He was weird and dorky. I got to know him and I've had a past of whipping my friends into shape. I showed him how to be a man, how to flirt with girls, everything like in this movie. I just saw it today and it was pretty sad towards the ending. My friend had to move back to his faraway state and I dunno when I'll see him again. He's got a girlfriend waiting for him so I know he succeeded in becoming a real man.

Id like to believe John and Gene see each other in the far future or maybe write a few letters every other year

I don't think it is that bummy of an ending. Johnathan grew thanks to Gene. He finally saw what matters, that sex isn't everything, took on the town big shot and put him in his place, and then asked out the genuinely sweet girl in town who was in love with him all along. I am sure they would meet up or reunite down the line if they survived the college and/or the draft.

I was choking up when Johnathan was struggling saying goodbye and wanted to hug Gene, then when Gene encouraged him to hug and I started to cry a little, then I saw the look of sadness on Gene's face when they stopped hugging and I just lost it!

Their relationship was the emotional center of the movie.
